How we made friends with the fire dept. during the 2012 St. Cloud Agency Crawl

By

At Flint Group, we love an excuse to host a party.

So when our team at HatlingFlint, our St. Cloud office, heard about the second St. Cloud Agency Crawl, we got planning right away.

We were one of 13 area marketing and communications firms to take part in the event, which is hosted by the AdFed of Central Minnesota. It’s basically a chance for students from area schools to visit ad agencies and get a feel for what it’s like in the creative industry.

In addition to sharing samples of work from the Flint Group agencies, we also wanted to add a little fun. Our theme last year was paparazzi. This year, we set up a popcorn bar featuring freshly made popcorn and fixings.

Ye ol’-fashioned popper.

Ye ol’-fashioned popper.

I didn’t even realize how many different flavors of popcorn you could have. I mean, I just thought popcorn was popcorn. But my co-workers introduced me to all kinds of new salt flavorings, like white cheddar, sour cream and onion, Parmesan garlic, Cajun, and even toasted marshmallow.

I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be the same.

Some of our college visitors. They are clearly just as amazed by the absurdly abundant flavorings as I was.

We had students come from a variety of area schools, including Alexandria Technical and Community College, St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud Technical and Community College and Central Lakes College.

We were having lots of fun mixing flavor combos and talking with these college chaps …  until the smoke alarms went off. Oops.

We called the alarm service to tell them not to worry – that it was just popcorn – but the St. Cloud Fire Department came anyway.

We offered our rescue team a bag of goodies for their valiant efforts, but these heroes were far too humble.

Amid all this commotion, we never stopped poppin’. My coworkers and I just moved the machine outside and continued to serve popcorn.

All in all, it was a great day and we had a lot of fun sharing our work and crazy popcorn flavors with area college students.

Plus, we made friends with our local fire department, which is never a bad thing, right?
